Fandom Dictionary: A Specialized Lexicography feat. Spoilers for Everything and Also the Fandom Definition of Spoilers

Actorfic/actor fic (noun) - fan fiction centered around the actors who portray a character in a movie or television show as opposed to the characters themselves. Type of Real People Fic.

 “While I ship Klaine, (Blaine and Kurt on Glee), I also ship CrissColfer, or Chris Colfer (actor who plays Kurt) and Darren Criss (actor who plays Blaine). It’s my favorite kind of actorfic to read.”

Alex Reads Twilight (phrase) – series of videos made by British YouTuber Alex Day ( YT username “nerimon”) in which he reads the book Twilight and then vlogs about it. He’s very critical of the book, especially a character “Lauren.” (see “Lauren”) Charlieissocoollike/Charlie McDonnell takes over one video at one point.

“Have you seen Alex Reads Twilight? It’s hilarious- and ridiculous! Those books are terrible!”

 

Allons-y/Allons-y Alonzo (phrase) – catchphrase of the Tenth Doctor, meaning “Let’s Go” in French. One of his life goals in this regeneration is to find someone named Alonzo to say that to, making the phrase, “Allonz-y, Alonzo!” Eventually he finds one in Voyage of the Damned, the new!Who s3 Christmas Special. Whovians often say this to their friends.

“It’s insane how many misspellings there are of that simple phrase, ‘allons-y.’ The Doctor would be ashamed! Allons-y!”

 

Anon (noun/adj.) – Tumblrspeak for a person who sends an anonymous message or comment via ask box. Sometimes used to describe people who are anon in a joking fashion or to get them to reveal their identities or capitalized when referring to someone with their name hidden. Occasionally they are spammers. The10thdoctor on Tumblr commonly refers to them as “Shimmer!Person” based on the bit in s4 episode End of Time in which the Doctor reveals some alien’s true looks underneath their shimmers or disguises.

“I’ve got an anon giving me hate.”

“Quit being so anon, Anon.”

 

Archbishop of Hipster (phrase) – title used to refer to Arthur Darvill as the second most hipster male in the universe, second only to the Archduke, Matt Smith. See “Archduke of Hipster.” He often wears plaid and very interesting sweaters.

“Arthur Darvill wears so much plaid, I had to write a fic shipping him with it. He’s totally the Archbishop of Hipster.”


Archduke of Hipster (phrase) – title used to refer to Matt Smith or the Eleventh Doctor. Both the actor and the character are undeniably hipster, with their eccentric clothing and obscure interests. Mostly, the meme refers to Matt Smith but uses a picture of him in costume as the Doctor, sitting on a throne with his hands up. Similarly, Karen Gillan, who plays Amy Pond, is the High Priestess of Hipster and Arthur Darvill or Rory Williams is the Archbishop of Hipster.

“Matt Smith’d be the King of Hipster, but King is far too mainstream, so we call him the Archduke instead.”


_____ are cool (phrase) – Catchphrase of the Eleventh Doctor on Doctor Who, who wears eccentric clothing on occasions, particularly bowties, fezzes, and stetsons.

“Legs! Good. Bowtie! Cool. …I can buy a fez.”

 


Ask box (noun) – place on Tumblr where people can leave messages for an individual person. They can be written anonymously (see “anon”) and can be either published or kept private. Some people do not have an ask box or anon enabled, but usually it can be reached by typing the person’s URL with /ask after it.

“My ask box is empty all the time; no one ever wants to talk to me!”

 

AU (noun) – Alternative/Alternate Universe. Fanfiction type that allows the writer to avoid canon entirely. This usually involves what-if situations, or spin-offs from the main show that never ended up happening.

“Turn Left is sort of a AU episode of it’s own, even though it’s in the canon of the show, because it describes what would hace happened if Donna had never met the Doctor.”

 

AVPM/AVPS (proper noun) – A Very Potter Musical/A Very Potter Sequel. Fan made, parody musicals of the Harry Potter series put on by Team Starkid and later published to YouTube. Many of the non-canon Harry Potter jokes come from these two musicals. Harry Potter is played by Darren Criss.

“Have you seen AVPM and AVPS yet? They’re really, really funny; you should. Voldemort dances!”

 

Bad Wolf (phrase) – In the Doctor Who canon, signifies Rose after looking into the Time Vortex and also a the end of the universe. In s4 and s1 of new!Who, the words “Bad Wolf” pop up everywhere the Doctor, goes, scattered through time and space by badwolf!Rose. Picture below is Rose as the Bad Wolf. This is often written on things by Whovians, either to scare other Whovians or make themselves clear AS Whovians.

“I am the Bad Wolf. I create myself. I take the words… I scatter them, in time and space. A message, to lead myself here.”

 


Bananas (noun) – The Tenth and Ninth Doctors love bananas, and they are mentioned on several occasions. Some consider this to be an innuendo. Others believe that the Doctor just generally loves bananas. He suggest you “always bring a banana to a party” and claims to have “invented the banana daiquiri several centuries early.”

“Oi! I like bananas, bananas are good.”

 

Barrowman! (interjection) –cause for blame or excuse. Originates from David Tennant’s episode of “Nevermind the Buzzcocks” in which he shakes his fist and shouts that Barrowman is to blame several times. May substitute “Moffat.”

“That’s a line removed from an episode of Torchwood. BARROWMAAAN!”

Betareader (noun) – fan fiction editor who reads and reviews a story before release to the rest of the internet

“I found a really nice betareader to check over my stuff, but they still missed this really huge plot hole.”

 

Bingle Bongle, Dingle Dangle/Bingle Bongle, Dingle Dangle, Yikkity Too, Yikkity Ta, Lippy Toppy Too Ta (phrase) – see “pears.” From the same cut clip as the pears snippet, in which David Tennant has to talk for about a minute so that when Martha fast forwards through his instructions to the end, it looks like he’s been talking. He describes his favorite band and goes on for a little bit, and then wraps up, but not before making those noises.

“Alright, I’m going to wrap up now, but not before making a few strange noises with my mouth bingle bongle dingle dangle yikkity too, yikkity ta, lippy toppy too ta and twenty three- if anything goes wrong- if they find us Martha- you know what to do.”

 

Bite me, Alien Boy (phrase) – originating from David Tennant and Catherine Tate’s Shakespeare Comic Relief sketch. (see “bovvered”) Catherine pretends to be a stupid, interrupting student, but is of course a Shakespearean actress and therefore manages to throw out a whole Shakespearean monolog when Tennant’s character critisizes her of being “unworthy of speaking the name of Shakespeare.” At the end she shouts out this line. Commonly used by fans as a sign of success and a challenge.

“…And yet by heaven I think my love as rare, as any she belied with false compare. BITE ME ALIEN BOY!”

 

Black Santa (noun) – joke from John Green’s book Paper Towns (see “Vlogbrothers”), in which one of the characters, Radar, is the son of the the owners of the world’s largest collection of black Santas, leading to him being unable to have friends over at his house very often.

“IT’S NOT MY FAULT MY PARENTS OWN THE WORLD’S LARGEST COLLECTION OF BLACK SANTAS!”

 

Blainofsky (noun) – ship name for Blaine and Karofsky from Glee.

“Blainofsky seems like a strange ship to me, because Blaine and Karofsky only interact in a negative way.”

 

Blam (noun) – Glee ship name for Blaine/Sam

“Blam seems like an even stranger ship than Blainofsky, because I can’t remember a single time Blaine and Sam have had a one on one conversation.” 


Blesse (noun) – ship name for Blaine and Jesse from Glee (uncommon ship)

“Have Blaine and Jesse even met each other? And who ships Blesse?” 


Blink (proper noun) – new!Who ep. of Doctor Who Season 3. Also a Chameleon Circuit trock song. (see “trock” or the video linked) Well known in the fandom for being absolutely terrifying, and newbie Whovians are told that it will be far scarier than it actually is as a sort of initiation. The episode features the Weeping Angels (see “don’t blink.”)

“The lonely assassins they used to be called. No one quite knows where they came from but they’re as old as the universe- or very nearly- and they have survived this long because they gave the most perfect defense system ever evolved. They are quantum locked. They don’t exist when they’re being observed. They moment they are seen by any other living creature they freeze into rock. No choice, it’s a fact of their biology. In the sight of any living thing they literally turn into stone, and you can’t kill a stone. Of course, a stone can’t kill you, either, but then you turn your head away, then you blink, and oh, yes it can.”

 

Blinn (noun) – Glee ship name for Blaine/Finn

“Blinn is an interesting ship because Glee has already established that Finn is not gay.”

 

Bondage chair (noun) – Both a type of fic and a canon situation in Doctor Who. Refers to the chair the Tenth Doctor was strapped into in End of Time by the Master.

“The Doctor’s incapacitated again…”

“Oh, is it bondagechair!Master/Doctor?”

 

Bowties (noun) – see “___ are cool” Common article worn by the Eleventh Doctor. He checks it when he finds himself alive as if it is one of the most important things in his life and mentions it frequently.

“Bowties are cool.”

 

Bovvered (verb) – bothered or upset. Used frequently in the Catherine Tate and David Tennant Shakespeare Comic Relief skit in which David Tennant plays Catherine’s English teacher, and Catherine is an annoying student. Common uses include:

“Amst I bovvered forsooth?”

“I still ain’t bovvered!”

“Is this the bovvered face?”

 

Brainy specs (noun) – eyeglasses worn by the Tenth Doctor in new!Who and the Fifth Doctor in classic!Who. Ten claims he just wears them to look clever, while Five says he’s nearsighted in one eye. A trope that makes a character look cute and intelligent. Also used to refer to glasses on other people… particularly nerd-celebrities like John Green, Darren Criss, et cetera.

“Clearly everyone awesome either wears brainy specs or is a British telepath.”

“You don’t even need them! You just think they make you look a bit clever.” -Ten to Five on his brainy specs

 

Brilliant (adj.) – phrase often used by Ten in new!Who to describe anything fantastic. Additionally, Nine prefers fantastic and Ten also uses molto bene.

“Oh, Donna, that’s brilliant! Yes you are you’re AMAZING!”

 

Brittana (noun) – ship name for Brittany and Santana from the TV show Glee. There was a Brittana kiss in Glee Live.

“I ship Brittana because it clearly makes them both so happy.”

 


Bronies (noun) – older (age 15-30) male fans of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. This includes Nick Lang, part of Team Starkid. Otherwise used to describe any fan of My Little Pony.

“My brother is a brony. My parents worry about him, but I know that he’s really joining the ranks of a fantastic and sparkly group of young men.”

 

By the power of Pond (phrase) – refers to the fact that Karen Gillan, who plays Amy Pond in Doctor Who s5 and 6, also played a member of the Sibylline Sisterhood in the s4 episode “The Fires of Pompeii.” The Sybilline sisters had eyes painted on the back of their hands and dressed all in red, with white painted faces. At one point Karen’s character raises her arms above her head and brings her palms up over her eyes, with the drawn eyes facing out. Possibly a parody of the Prince of Egypt line “by the power of Rah!” but definitely referring to the fact that many actors who play new!Who companions start out in more minor roles.

“How did that happen in s5? I dunno… BY THE POWER OF POND!”

 


Canniblaine (noun) – Glee phenomenon and series of fanfics in which the character Blaine is a cannibal who tries to eat Kurt. Supported by the song “Animal” which came out soon after and featured the line, “take a bite of my heart tonight.” Original CanniBlaine fic here.

Can’t Even/I Can’t Even (phrase) - Tumblrspeak used to show how utterly at a loss for words someone is, usually in response to someone hot or something mindblowing. See “hnng,” “keyslam,” and “what is air.” 

“I just… I can’t even, have you seen that?” 


Canon (adj.) – something that follows strictly to the rules of the original show, movie, book, et cetera. Some shows tend to disagree with themselves and their own canon over the course of their series, and many fanfics disregard it entirely.

“That idea is totally not canon, but it is very amusing nevertheless.”

 

Celery (noun) – vegetable worn on the lapel of the Fifth incarnation of the Doctor in classic!Who. This was a full stalk of celery, with leaves on the top and everything, and is an iconic part of his costume.

Peri: “Doctor, why do you wear a stick of celery in your lapel?”

Doctor: “Does it offend you?”

Peri: “No, just curious.”

Doctor: “Safety precaution. I’m allergic to certain gases in the praxis range of the spectrum.”

Peri: “Well, how does the celery help?”

Doctor: “If the gas is present, the celery turns purple.”

Peri: “And then what do you do?”

Doctor: “I eat the celery. If nothing else, I’m sure it’s good for my teeth.”

 


classic!Who/old!Who (noun) – see “Doctor Who” and “new!Who” The older version of the British show, which was not released after the Eighth Doctor movie produced by FOX in 1996. Some old Who fans insist that you can’t be a fan unless you’ve seen all the old episodes, but most fans disagree with the practicality of this. Sometimes written without the exclamation point separation.

“Classic!Who episodes are generally slightly tacky and old fashioned, which makes sense as it is a very old show. Nevertheless, they are appealing.”

 

Colorful Dalek (noun) – Season 5 of new!Who Doctor Who daleks. See “Sassy Gay Cyberman.” Also commonly called the iDalek because they are so uncharacteristically colorful, where Daleks supposedly “have no concept of elegance” and lack even the ability to be happy or scared.

“God, I’m still upset about the colorful Daleks. That just makes no sense at all!”

 


Con (noun) – convention of fans.

“This summer I’m going to LeakyCon, where I’ll get to meet a ton of Harry Potter fans and talk about the series.”

 

Cookies!Doktah/cookies (noun) – See “Roes loved drugs” A similar fanon suggests that the Doctor loves cookies. Just as jam!Watson is generally considered stupid, cookies!Doktah is commonly a little less brilliant than the regular Doctor, hence the lolspeak of his name. When Roes talks about the Doctor she calls him Doktah.

“Doktah! I ate the last of teh cookies!”

“Roes! How could you! No more drugz for you.”

 

Courage (phrase) – statement commonly said from Blaine to Kurt while Kurt is still at McKinley in Glee; fandom took it to the extreme and now refers to it constantly in every situation. Blaine will just pop up, shout “COURAGE, KURT” and leave.

“COURAGE. THAT’S WHAT YOU NEED. COURAGE.”

“Yes Blaine, I got the text, I-“

“DID YOU HEAR ME? COURAGE.”

“Yeah I get it-“
“COUUURRRRRAAAAAGGGGEEEEEEE.”

 


Crossover (noun) – something fan-made that incorporates ideas, characters, places, ideas, etc. from another fandom

“SuperWho is my favorite crossover fandom, which is a mix between Supernatural and Doctor Who.”

 

Cumbermaster (proper noun) – an idea created by some fans who believe that Benedict Cumberbatch should be the next actor to play the Master on Doctor Who. This follows the format of referring to previous Masters, like simm!Master.

“I don’t really want Cumbermaster; I think Benedict would make a better Twelfth Doctor. He’s already part Time Lord.”

 

Darrenkid (noun) – a fan of Darren Criss, an actor, singer, and songwriter with an EP out called “Human” who plays Blaine on Glee and who previously played Harry Potter in A Very Potter Musical and Sequel.

“Darrenkids are excessively loyal towards Darren Criss, and won’t hear a word against him.”

 

Dash (noun) – See “Tumblr.” Place where other people’s blog posts show up on the site besides their main blogs. Similar to a Facebook News Feed.

“I’ve just been scrolling up and down my dash for the past three hours looking for that post; I can’t remember who originally posted it.”

 

Decepticon (noun) – (see “Nerdfighter”) the opposite of a Nerdfighter, or a negative person who is trying to make the world’s situation worse.

“A lot of people at my school are decepticons; I get bullied quite a bit.”

 

DFTBADon’t Forget To Be Awesome. phrase used by the Vlogbrothers (see “vlogbrothers”) and Nerdfighters (see “nerdfighters”) to remind members to not let their awesome levels fade. There is also a song called DFTBA which features a variety of other explanations for the initialism, like Darling Fetch the Battle Ax and Dead Frogs Teach Bored Anatomists, any of which a Nerdfighter might tell you if you ask what DFTBA means. 

“Thanks for watching and DFTBA!”

 

Dobby’s Sock (interjection) – see “Wizard Swears.” Not canon.

“Dobby’s Sock, what on earth is that?!”

 

Doctor/TARDIS (noun) – pairing of the Doctor and his ship, made especially canon in the episode The Doctor’s Wife, in which the TARDIS becomes a woman named Idris temporarily. Does not just refer to Eleven/Idris but all regenerations of the Doctor and their ship. Most Whovians ship this.

“I don’t care which companion he has or how much chemistry they have together; my Doctor Who OTP will always be Doctor/TARDIS.”

 

Don’t Blink (phrase) – a warning resulting from the episode “Blink” of Doctor Who. The only way to not get killed by the Weeping Angels is to avoid blinking. This may refer to the episode, the warning monologue the Doctor gives to Sally Sparrow, or just being scared in general. This is also a Chameleon Circuit trock song.

“They’re coming. The angels are coming for you, but listen; your life could depend on this. Don’t blink, don’t even blink. Blink and you’re dead. They’re fast, faster than you can believe. Don’t turn your back, don’t look away, and don’t blink. Good luck.”

 

Doweeoo (phrase) – common Doctor Who fanon way of saying or typing the Doctor Who theme, as it doesn’t have any real lyrics. The beginning of the song might be written out like this:

“BumbadadadabumbadadadabumbadadadaBUMDADADADA

bumdadadadabumdadadadabumdadadadaBUMBBADADADA

doooWEEEEEEoooooooOOOOOOOOweeeeOOOOOO…..”

 


Drabble (noun) – a self-contained fanfiction no more than 100 words. Sometimes used more generally as just an extremely short fan fic. Also- half drabble is about 50 words and double drabble is 200.

“Maya, I want you to write a drabble about Martha’s mother in between the time she talks to Martha in 42 and is taken in by the Master.”


Drums, the (noun) – The drumming noise that the Master hears in his head, a four count beat, onetwothreefour. He uses this to take over the world, and then it is in turn used by the Time Lords to take over the universe. Whovians continually do this in the hopes of scaring a random Doctor Who fan.

 

 “Why are you tapping on the table?”

“Because I’m under the control of the Master, duh. The Drums, they’re inside my head.”

 

Edward Spoonhands (proper noun) – A repetitive and catchy song by Hank Green which he later made his Tumblr username. Parody of Edward Scissorhands.

“Edward and Edwina Spoonhands have a pretty hard time of it. They can only eat cereal, and they can only type about three words a minute, but they both agree it’s not as bad as it could be, and they clack their big old fingers, and they sing a little song for you and me. (repeat)”

 

Eight (proper noun) – refers to the eighth Doctor on Doctor Who, as played by Paul McGann. Ends classic!Who with the 1996 movie. Referred to as Eight or the Eight Doctor, but not generally liked in the fandom. Eight was the first Doctor to kiss someone in a romantic way. 

“Don’t you think Eight’s hair makes him look like Snape?”  


Eleven (proper noun) – refers to the eleventh Doctor on Doctor Who, as played by Matt Smith. As of 2011 he is the most recent and youngest Doctor. Known as Eleven or the Eleventh Doctor. See “bowties” and “fezzes” and “___ are cool.”

“Eleven is slightly ridiculous and bounds around, sonic-ing everything and shouting for his companions. He’s really just a nine year old.” 


Endgame (adj.) – used to describe a pairing as either canon or resulting in marriage; definition varies. Generally thrown in people’s faces by the Glee fandom.

“You know what? Finchel is totally endgame, so, don’t even try.”

 

Enterklainement Weekly (proper noun) – used to refer to the issue of Entertainment Weekly featuring Kurt and Blaine from Glee on the cover or just the magazine EW in general. This issue was one of the first to feature the two boys on the cover and included an article about gay relationships on television.

“I can’t find a copy of Enterklainement Weekly anywhere; they’re all sold out!”

 


Ep (noun) – short for an episode of a show

“I really love that ep, it’s all about how my favorite character evolved.”


Esther Earl (proper noun) – The most nerdfightertastic Nerdfighter who worked extensively with the HPA. Died at the age of 16 from thyroid cancer after making a profound difference in our hearts and in the world. See “This Star Won’t Go Out.” August 3rd, her birthday, is know known as Esther Day, on which everyone should tell their loved ones just how loved they are.

 

Faction (noun) – a part of a fandom split up over an issue, ship, or character

“My faction of the Glee fandom generally does not support Kurt dating Karofsky, his bully.”

 

Fanbrat (noun) – fan who picks at inconsistencies, continuity issues, etc. Sometimes considered a synonym with ‘fanboy.’

“I don’t care if you think that sky looks like a greenscreen; quit being a fanbrat.”

 

Fandom (noun)- the canon, characters, fan fiction, and fans of a particular show, movie, book, etc. Everything that happens as a part of the show, movie, book, etc. is part of the fandom.

“I consider myself a part of the Sherlock fandom- I really love that show.”

 

Fandoms Against H8 (proper noun) – A series of t-shirts made as a part of the FCKH8 movement. These feature fandom examples of not strictly traditional marriages, with the original slogan of “Some ____ marry ____; get over it” and then instead of fckh8 at the bottom, they have a fandom slogan.

 

Fangirl/fanboy/fansquee (noun) a person who acts particularly excited or obsessive about a fandom, or actor. The first two are gender specific and are therefore, in some situations, being slowly replaced with fansquee appeal more to non-binary fandom members. Some consider ‘fanboy’ and ‘fanbrat’ synonyms and ‘fangirl’ and ‘fansquee’ the same.

“God, I’m such a Murray Gold fangirl. And he’s just the Doctor Who composer!”

 

Fanon (noun) – something that is not strictly canon but is widely accepted by most fans.

“I know it doesn’t say it anywhere in Sherlock, but everyone agrees that John Watson loves jam. And Rose loved drugs.”

 

Fantastic (adj.) – phrase used by Nine to show something’s positive. See “brilliant” and “molto bene

“Oh, Rose, that’s fantastic!”

 

Fez (noun) – Article of clothing commonly worn by the Eleventh Doctor on the show Doctor Who. He first picks it up in Big Bang, where it is promptly shot to pieces by River Song. In The Impossible Astronaut, one of the things he asks for is a fez.

“I wear a fez now, fezzes are cool.”

 


Fic/fanfic/fanfiction (noun) – a piece of writing made by a fan of a show, book, or movie that’s based on that fandom. It can be canon (see “canon”) or based on fanon (see “fanon”) and can be in various lengths (see “drabble”) and can also be based on the actors in a show (see “actorfic”). Fanfics are often based on ships (see “ship”) but not always.

“One of my favorite fanfics ships Rory/Plaid, but I also like one that involves a series of notes passed between the Mauraders when they were at school.”

 

Fandom bicycle (noun) – The character that becomes a source of fandom for a book/film/game/tv show.

“Legolas is the fandom bicycle of the Lord of the Rings. Everyone’s had a ride.”

 

Fanvid (noun) – (See “fanfic”) a video based on a show or movie that takes clips or pictures from the main canon and edits and pieces them together to make a point or new story line. Similar to fanfiction, but in video form.

“I recently watched a fanvid that showed how the author believed Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows would end, as made through piecing together clips from the earlier movies.”

 

Finchel (noun) – ship name for Finn and Rachel from Glee.

“Finchel is a pretty cute couple, but they’re nothing compared to Klaine.”

 


Fish Fingers and Custard (noun) – the food finally decided on as acceptable by the Eleventh Doctor in new!Who shortly after his regeneration. A young Amy Pond, his future companion, tries to make him a variety of foods but he doesn’t like any of them. This later becomes something of an inside thing between them, and in the Impossible Astronaut, Amy swears to him “on something important-“ fish fingers and custard. Whovians use it similarly and also enjoy trying to make this food. “I swear it on fish fingers and custard.”

“I’m an American vegetarian, so the closest to fish fingers and custard I can get is veggie chicken nuggets and vanilla pudding.”

 


Five (proper noun) – refers to the fifth Doctor on Doctor Who. Played by Peter Davison and referred to as Five or the Fifth Doctor. Daughter married David Tennant, the Tenth Doctor. See “celery.”

 ”I think Five is absolutely adorable, and Peter Davison is hilarious.” 


Fluff (noun)/fluffy (adj.) – A fanfic or vid that is sweet and cute and does not involve anything dirty or violent.

“I’m of the belief that most Doctor/Martha fics should just be fluff because the Doctor doesn’t really love her.”

 

Follow Friday (noun) – Tumblr phenomenon in which every Friday, users post a list of their favorite blogs under that title so as to encourage their followers to follow their friends or favorite blogs.

“Who’s on you’re Follow Friday? Hopefully me!”

 

Forever alone (adj.) – indication that an individual is single, usually as a result of a quality they believe will keep them so forever. Associated with the meme face below.

“I’m such an obsessive person; I’m going to be forever alone.”

Often just “FOREVER ALONE.”

Giant Squid of Anger (noun) – (see “troll”) someone who likes to troll YouTube and make negative comments; alternatively what someone metaphorically becomes when they are very upset (Vlogbrothers term).

GIF (noun) – altered photo or short bit of animated image used to describe emotion and generally originating from one’s fandom.

“That GIF of David Tennant crying is perfect for this situation of sadness.”

 


Glass Case of Emotion/I’m in a Glass Case of Emotion (phrase) – commonly associated in fandom with a GIF of the Tenth Doctor just prior to his regeneration as he steps into a box filled with radiation, so as to free Wilfred from suffering the same fate. He knows this will kill him and also suffers intense pain, banging on the edge of the case and then sinking to the floor with his knees curled and his hands grabbing his hair, rocking back and forth until falling still. The GIF is taken as he bangs on the glass, and is captioned with that text. Let it be known that Maya hates this GIF.

Gleek (noun) – a fan of the television programme, Glee on FOX. Gleeks are known to other fandoms as obsessive, terrifying, and prone to rampage on hiatus. They frequently liveblog episodes and break fandom code due to their numbers being so large.

“Did you hear? A Gleek yesterday sent Darren a piece of fanfic with him in it. An actor fic! How rude. They ruin everything.”

 

GPOY (noun) – Gratuitous Picture of Yourself. Used to indicate when an image sums up the feelings of an individual or when one is posting an actual picture of themselves.

 

Headcanon/head!canon (noun) – see “canon.” Describes something that’s uniquely valid in someone’s head, but may not be accepted as “fanon” and is definitely not accepted as “canon.”

“One of my head!canons is that George sees himself standing next to Fred when he looks into the Mirror of Erised.”

 

Happy Dancing (verb) – the way a Nerdfighter shows amusement or pleasure. Every Nerdfighter has their own happy dance, and it can involve jumping up and down, pivots, or anything they want it to.

“I went to Venice and I was happy dancing in Saint Mark’s Square.”

 

Hiatus (noun) – The time a show takes off from being aired. The space between book publications is not referred to as such

“Glee is on hiatus again, so the fandom is going crazy.”

 

Hipster High Priestess (proper noun) – title given to Karen Gillan for her overwhelming hipsterness. See “Archduke of Hipster.” Queen of Hipster was too mainstream.

“Did you see that outfit Karen was wearing? She’s the Hipster High Priestess after all.”

Hipster Dalek (proper noun) – meme revolving around the Doctor’s most reliable enemy on Doctor Who. Features a Dalek with a scarf and a pair of wide glasses over a yellow and black background, captioned with hipster phrases mixed with Dalek things. Always in caps.

Hnng (phrase) - Tumblrspeak used to describe something or to show lack of ability to say anything in response to a particularly good looking person; demostrates desire for that person. Associated with “keyslam.”

Howler/How dare you steal that car (phrase) – Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets originated lecture. The howler Ron Weasley gets is edited to fit the situation, i.e., if someone is late, giving spoilers, not behaving how they should.

“Ronald Weasley! How dare you steal that car. I am absolutely disgusted! Your father’s now facing an inquiry at work, and it’s entirely your fault! If you put another toe out of line, I’ll bring you straight home! Oh and Ginny dear, congratulations on becoming a Gryffindor.”

 

HPA (proper noun) – Harry Potter Alliance. Charity organization founded on the Harry Potter series. Focuses on alerting the world of the dangers of poverty, genocide, and global warming, and supports equality, literacy, human rights, and creativity.

“Our mission is to empower our members to act like the heroes they love by acting for a better world. By bringing together fans of blockbuster books, TV shows, movies, and YouTube celebrities, we are harnessing the power of popular culture towards making our world a better place. Our goal is to make civic engagement exciting by channeling the entertainment-saturated facets of our culture towards mobilization for deep and lasting social change.”


Idris (proper noun) – human form of the TARDIS in The Doctor’s Wife. See “Doctor/TARDIS,” “Sexy,” and “TARDIS”

 


IRL (adverb/noun)- In Real Life. Used to describe something that hasn’t been done or doesn’t exist in the real world outside of the internet or a roleplay world.

Jack/Everything (proper noun) – Common ship in the Doctor Who and Torchwood fandoms due to Captain Jack Harkness’ overwhelming sexual obsession with everything and everyone.

Jam!Watson (noun) - See “Watson loves jam”

 

Jianto/Janto (proper noun) – Ship name for Jack and Ianto from Torchwood. This ship is canon and well-loved, despite Ianto’s death at the end of Children of the Earth: Day 4.

“I cried so hard when Ianto died; Janto is just so adorable.”

 

Jelly Baby (noun) – Small British sweet kind of like a gummy bear that’s a favorite of the Doctor, particularly the classic!Who Fourth Doctor. simm!Mater also offers one to his bride in a new!Who episode. The Doctor has a tendency to offer them to everyone. “Would you like a Jelly Baby?” could be considered Four’s catch phrase.

Jenga (phrase) - Joke resulting from the fact that on Glee, none of the Warblers other than Blaine and Kurt ever have any main singing parts. They always just do background and make noises while Blaine sings melody… in EVERY song. In Raise Your Glass, the background noise they make is ‘jenga.’ Image below titled ‘How To Speak Warbler.’


Jethro (proper noun) – Minor character in the new!Who s4 episode “Midnight.” He is played by Colin Morgan, who plays Merlin in the other BBC show, Merlin. See “Middle of nowhere.” Jethro is constantly criticized as the depressed, annoying teenager.


Kartie (noun) – Glee ship name for Kurt and Artie (uncommon ship)

 

Keyslam/asdfghjkl;’ (intj., adj., misc. use) – random series of letters used to describe something or someone. Often used with capslock to signal lack of ability to think rationally due to pictures of attractive people or something that would signal squeeing or fangirling.

King of Okay (proper noun) – Title Eleven gives to himself in The Impossible Astronout, ep 1 s6 of new!Who.

Kinn (noun) – Ship name for Finn and Kurt from Glee.

 

Klaine (noun) – Ship name (see “ship” or “pairing”) for Blaine and Kurt from Glee. This ship was made canon with a kiss in Episode 16. (see “kliss”)

“Many people ship Klaine simply because it is one of the only gay couples on mainstream American television.”

 

Klainebow (noun) – Similar to “Everything is Klaine and nothing hurts” Based off of the ship “Klaine” and the association of gayness with rainbows.

Klarguments (noun) – Arguments between the members of the Klaine ship. See “Klaine.”

“Have you seen that episode in which Kurt yells at Blaine for saying he might be bi?”

Kliss, the (noun) – the kiss between Blaine and Kurt from Glee (see “klaine”) in episode 16. This kiss has lead to the common phrase in the fandom, “everything is klaine and nothing hurts.”

Knock four times/He will knock four times (phrase) – The Ood tell the Doctor that the man who kills him will “knock four times.” He takes this to mean the Master, who has a onetwothreefour rhythm constantly in his head. (See “The Drums”) It turns out to mean Wilf, instead, who is trapped in a box of radiation (see “Glass Case of Emotion”) Since it means the Doctor is going to die, it’s a good way to scare fans.

Kurt CoBlaine (noun) – see “Klaine.” Another name for Blaine/Kurt, originating from the name Kurt Cobain. The ship name supported heartily by Darren Criss. Original Darren tweet has since been deleted.

Kurtsie (noun) – Fans of the character Kurt on Glee. The name is given to them by Chris Colfer, the actor who plays Kurt on the show, due to the character’s effeminate nature.

Kurtofsky (noun) – Ship name for Kurt and Karofsky on Glee.

 

Lauren (proper noun) – Twilight character who Alex Day (see “Alex Reads Twilight”) considers entirely useless and forgettable. Often blamed in fandom, see “Barrowman” and “Steve.”

Lens flare (noun) – phenomenon frequent in new!Who in which characters dramatically point their flashlights or other light-making devices right at the camera, giving that flash of light. Very common when using the Sonic Screwdriver.

LfA (proper noun) – Looking for Alaska. Teen book by John Green about a boy named Pudge who is a fan of the last words of famous people and moves to boarding school to seek his great perhaps, where he meets a girl named Alaska Young who changes his life suddenly and spectacularly.

 


LWL (proper noun) – Little White Lie. Series of videos put out by Team Starkid or StarKidPotter. Stars Darren Criss, Lauren Lopez, and Elona Finlay. Ends on a cliffhanger.

“I think LWL is the weakest of the Starkid shows, but it’s still really good.”

 

Love You So Mu-Uh-Uch/I Love You So Mu-Uh-Uch (phrase) – commonly associated with a GIF taken from Supernatural of one of the characters sobbing relentlessly. Captioned with the above and used with any variety of pronoun in order to show overwhelming gratitude and love. Also used on its own without text, see “Raining On My Face”

Mary-Sue (noun) – a type of character, generally in fanfiction although occasionally in the canon of a series, that is too perfect, too extreme, or otherwise poorly done and described. Mary-Sues can be vague or too unreal.

Matt Smith’s Chin (noun) – phenomenon of Matt Smith’s (The Eleventh Doctor) face. His chin is commonly called “ridiculous,” “hilarious,” “insane,” and “amazing,” and leads to him being a favorite of comic artists, as it makes him really easily recognizable. Christopher Eccleston’s ears are also an in-canon joke.

“There are a ton of memes on the internet, but some include Dramatic Chipmunk, Boxxy, Yo Dawg, Keyboard Cat, and Om Nom Nom.”

Middle Of Nowhere/In the Middle of Nowhere (phrase) – See “Jethro.” Phrase loved by the Doctor Who fandom, said by the character Jethro in the episode Midnight. The delivery and Colin Morgan’s face as he says it lead to this. Jethro and this line have become a fandom inside joke.

Molto bene (phrase/adj.) – phrase commonly used by Ten in new!Who to describe something positively. See “brilliant.”

 

Mop (noun) – See “fez.” Temporarily carried by the Eleventh Doctor in Big Bang as he tries to use it to barracade a door. He takes it back in time with him when he goes to explain to Rory about putting Amy in the Pandorica.

“That’s… a mop. Why have you got a mop?”

 

Muggle (noun) – Harry Potter word to describe a non-magic person, as opposed to a wizard. Fandom uses it as a general insult or for people who are not fans of Harry Potter.

“You haven’t read the books?! Get away from me, you muggle!”

 

NaNoWriMo (proper noun) – National Novel Writing Month. Also “NaNo.” The project during the month of November in which people who want to write a book spend the month doing just that. If they reach 50,000 words between November 1 and November 30, then they win.

“Are you participating in NaNo this year?”

“Nah, I never win- I think I’ll probably just write a fandom dictionary instead.”

 

Nerd (noun)/nerdy (adj.) – formerly an insult, now reclaimed to mean “enthusiastic.” Nerds are traditionally obsessive and participate in fandom activities.

“Because nerds like us are allowed to be unironically enthusiastic… nerds are allowed to love stuff, like jump up and down in the chair, can’t control yourself love it. When people call people nerds, mostly what they’re saying is, “you like stuff.” Which is just not a good insult at all. Like, “you are too enthusiastic about the miracle of human consciousness.”

 

Nerdfighter/Nerdfighteria (noun) – A person who is a nerd (see “nerd”) and also fights to decrease world suck and increase world awesome. Works to make the world a better place through being passionate about things. The group was indirectly founded by Hank and John Green (see “vlogbrothers”) because nerdfighters tend to be followers of their video logs. Nerdfighteria is the group at large.

“Instead of being made of bones or tissue, nerdfighters are made of pure awesome.”

 

Nerdfighter Gathering (noun) – A group of nerds, see “nerdfighter” and “con.” Sometimes John and Hank attend (see “Vlogbrothers)

Newbie (noun) – Someone new to a fandom.

Nine (proper noun) – refers to the ninth Doctor on Doctor Who. Starts up new!Who in 2005. Played by Christopher Eccleston and generally known as Nine or the Ninth Doctor.

OP (noun) – Original Poster. Used to describe the person who first wrote about a subject or made a blog post about a subject, especially when the name of the person is not known to the person replying. Can also be used on submission sites where posts are anonymous.

OTP/OT3 (noun) – One True Pairing/One True Threesome. (see “ship” and “pairing”) Used to describe the pairing or threesome the fan loves more than all others. A fan could have a OTP for each of their fandoms or one that overrides all of them.

“Although I really love Klaine, I have to say that Snape/Lily is my OTP.”

 

Pairing (noun) – a selection of characters in a relationship with each other, either in the canon or outside it.”

“One of my favorite pairings is Klaine, or Kurt and Blaine from Glee.”

 

Pavarotti (proper noun) – Bird owned by the Warblers on the show Glee. The death of this bird enabled the Kliss (see “Klaine;” “Kliss.”)

“Oh, thank you. I’ll take him [Pavarotti] to work with me; I volunteer in a dog shelter at the bottom of a coal mine.”


Pavarotti Twitter/FreePav (proper noun) – Roleplay Twitter account commonly considered to be run by someone inside the show, but revealed to just be a middle aged man living in the Midwest. He commonly interacts with the Warblers and members of the show regardless.

Pears (noun) – food particularly despised by the Tenth Doctor in new!Who. This isn’t in an episode but is featured in a deleted scene/behind the scenes bit from Family of Blood, in which the Doctor is describing rules Martha should follow and remember when he turns human to escape the Family. Right after this scene, human!Doctor is seen eating a pear.

“Three. Don’t ever let me eat pears. I hate pears. John Smith is just a character that I made up, but he won’t know that, and he might do something stupid like eat a pear. I don’t want to wake up from being human with the taste of pears in my mouth.”

 

pink sunglasses (noun) – Darren Criss’ signature article of clothing/accessory. He often wears them to events, et cetera, and they are for sale in his shop. Team Starkid has adapted to fit this and has started selling different colours of the same style of Ray Bans.

“Is Darren wearing his pink sunglasses again? This is hardly the type of event for them!”

 


Pizza John (noun)- a stage of John Green (see “Vlogbrothers”) life in which he had a mustache, which in turn lead to him making a creepy face which was then superimposed over a red background as a silhouette image and the word “pizza” added underneath. This image of him looks something like a Russian philosopher and has since been placed on a shirt, which is the most recognizable and simple way to find a Nerdfighter.

“My Pizza John shirt came in the mail yesterday and I’ve already been hugged by three Nerdfighters.”

 


Polka music/Darren polka (noun) – after forgetting the chords to a song he had written, “Status Quo,” on a livestream, Darren fiddled about with his keyboard and found a polka track, which did not help him remember any better.

Potterhead (noun) – Fan of the book series and movies, Harry Potter. Also known as “Scarheads,” “Pottheads,” and “Potterfans.”

Precious, the/my (proper noun) – The Ring in the Lord of the Rings. Referred to as such by Gollum or Smeagol. Has taken on fandom connotation of anything valuable that you don’t want to be rid of. or as something to swear on that is very important.

Prettytalk (noun) - Describes the word choice of people who are being lazy or un-original in their conversations. Originates from Scott Westerfeld’s Uglies series, in which the people speaking prettytalk were the Pretties, who were actually operated on to limit their intelligence and rebellious ideas. Prettytalk includes using “bubbly” to describe everything good and “bogus” to describe everything bad, and then just short, basic words for everything else. 

“Going to school is less effective than it could be, as I’m bombarded with prettytalk in every hallway.” 

Puckleberry (noun) – ship name for Puck and Rachel from Glee.

 


Puckurt (noun) – ship name for Kurt and Puck from Glee.

 

Puff Levels (noun) – the amount of poof in John Green (see “Vlogbrothers”) hair, as determined by how stressed he is

Purple shirt/Purple Shirt of Sex (noun) – Tight article of clothing worn by BBC!Sherlock the fandom took a liking to. Featured in many comics and fanfics.

P4A (proper noun) – Project For Awesome. Annual Nerdfighter based charity that takes place every winter, in which YouTubers make videos promoting their favorite charities, and then comment, like, and discuss the videos.

“On this one day out of three hundred and sixty-five, we’re all making videos with the same screenshot, the same titles, and the same theme: We want to make the world a better place, and so we’re thanking people who have dedicated their lives to do that, and promoting their cause with our time and our money.” 


Quality (adjective) - title given to a blog that is interesting and original. See “Tumblr” and “Tumblr famous.” Used less to describe something in “You post some quality stuff!” as “That blog is quality.” Additionally called “koala tea” or “koala coffee” as a variation off of the word and then the koala tea variation. 


Queen Rowling (proper noun) – Fandom name for Joanne Kathleen Rowling, JKR, J.K. Rowling, who invented the Harry Potter series. Insults to her will not be tolerated.

“Don’t ever let me hear you insult Queen Rowling in front of me again! *brandishes umbrella*”

 


Quinntana (noun) – ship name for Quinn and Santana from Glee.

 

Raine (noun) – Ship name for Blaine/Rachel. They kissed at a party in an episode in which Blaine temporarily thought he was bi. Kurt and Blaine had a falling out, after which their friendship and relationship was closer than ever. See “Klainebow.”

Raining On My Face (phrase) – Fully, “I’m not crying, it’s just raining on my face.” Particularly associated with a GIF of the Tenth Doctor from new!Who shortly after leaving his companion, Donna Noble, and wiping her memory. Wilf, her grandfather, tells the Doctor he will always remember him, and Ten thanks him while standing in the rain looking sad. This is really originated from the first line of the Flight of the Concords song, “Not Crying.”

Red Converse (noun) –article of clothing typically worn by the Tenth Doctor. Many fans have gone out and bought some because of this (hence the picture of me holding a shoe below) He also has a pair of white high-tops and black high-tops for fancy occasions.

“I bought a pair of red Converse the other day, and I named them Ten and Ten.5.”


 

Red Vines (proper noun) – a type of licorice referred to as a longstanding joke in AVPS. Loved by both Ron and Harry and a seeming placement, although the company only sent them Red Vines and not any money.

Reverse the Polarity of the Neutron Flow/Reverse the Polarity (phrase) – classic!Who phrase (esp. Third Doctor) adapted several times for new!Who. Meant to explain away any issues that can’t be solved with modern technology.

“All I need to do here is reverse the polarity and it should stop this system…”

“It shouldn’t take me that long to just reverse the polarity; I must be out of practice.”

 

Ricky (proper noun) – nickname for Doctor Who character Mickey Smith, who is first Rose’s boyfriend and then becomes Martha Jones’ husband, both companions. The Doctor calls him Ricky because he can’t remember his name, and later, in the parallel universe where Rose ends up living, his parallel double is actually named Rickey.

“Do you even remember my name?”

“Yes, Ricky.”

“It’s Mickey.”

“No, it’s Ricky.”

“I think I know my own name.”

Roleplay (noun/verb)- acting out a character or set of characters in a fandom. Often there are whole communities set up that only interact as their characters.

Roes (proper noun) – (see “Roes loved drugs”) a bastardization of the name “Rose” from Doctor Who series one and two. This is a fanon was to pronounce her name and is commonly associated with “Roes loved drugs.” It is fanon to spell the name this way when making Rose stupid, due mainly to this following “lolspeak” traditions. (Lolspeak is not a fandom word and so shall not be included here, but is common internet slang for purposeful and hardly readable misspellings of words in association with pictures of cats or stupidity). Usually only spelled this way when linked to drugs. (See “Roes loved drugs”)

Rose loved drugs/Roes loved drugs (phrase) – a phrase originating from a Doctor Who comic, where it was originally “Rose loved drugs” but then gained increased fanon credibility when it mixed with “Roes” (see “Roes”). The comic features Martha Jones, series three companion, when she visits New Earth with the Doctor, where he took Martha in the previous season. He keeps complaining that she’s reminding him of Rose, which happens several times in the third series. The fandom has taken this into their own hands and this has become a meme and a longstanding joke in the fandom.

Sassy Gay Cyberman – (see “Sassy Gay Doctor”) meme created by fans of Doctor Who as a play off of the Sassy Gay Friend meme. Based off of a moment in Doomsday that has since been made into a comic with photoshopped pictures from the episode. This leads to the joking fanon that the Sassy Gay Cyberman is the one who created the colorful Daleks.

This was then photoshopped over a spiral background and captioned with statements about the Doctor’s companions and enemies. Play off of the Sassy Gay Friend meme. Second Breakfast (noun) – meal from The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring that takes place between breakfast and lunch, sort of like a morning break snack.

Sherlockian (noun) – name for fans of Sherlock, be it the books, the movie, or the various television programmes. Generally, Sherlockian refers to fans of the BBC Sherlock programme made by Gatiss and Moffat, but it doesn’t have to.

“I haven’t been a Sherlockian for very long but I really do love this fandom.”

 

Sherlock/Watson (noun) – pairing name for Sherlock and Watson, generally from BBC!Sherlock. This is definitely fanon and hinted to as canon in the show, but never technically resolved.

“I wish they’d just go out and say that Sherlock/Watson is canon, but I guess it is Steven Moffat writing, so he can never really give us what we want.” 

 

ship (noun/verb) – See “pairing.” Short for “relationship.” Can be used to describe a person’s approval or disapproval of a pairing.

“I ship them together.”

Can also be used as the relationship between two characters.

“I will go down with this ship.”

 

Shoulder (noun) – A Glee comic related fanon in which Blaine is entirely turned on by shoulders. See “Klaine” and “toast.” Kurt, being the Victorian slut that he is, rarely shows Blaine even so much as his shoulder, which is probably the origin of this fanon.

“You must make me toast before I’ll show you any shoulder.”

 


Six (proper noun) – refers to the sixth Doctor on Doctor Who, as played by Colin Baker. Goes by Six or Sixth Doctor. Known for his coat.

 

skoodilypoop (verb) – Nanny Green’s (John and Hank Green’s grandmother) Word for kissing or making out.

John Green: “I’m sorry we’re late.”

Nanny Green: “Are you sure you weren’t skoodilypooping?”

 

Slash (noun) – type of fanfiction or pairing featuring two members of the same sex. See “/” for the actual punctuation mark that separates names in a couple.

So Jokes (noun) – positive Nerdfighter word indicating something is amazing; the title of one of Hank Green’s albums.

Sorry, I’m So Sorry/I’m Sorry, I’m So Sorry (phrase) – commonly used phrase by the Tenth incarnation of the Doctor in new!Who. He says this generally to people right before they’re about to die or after he has been unable to save them. Whovians like to say this to any minor issue to sound more like the Doctor.

“You failed that test? I’m sorry, I’m so sorry.”

“I’m sorry, I’m so sorry, but I just couldn’t save her.”

 

Sort out her priorities/she needs to sort out her priorities (phrase) – originating from the first Harry Potter movie and repeated in the seventh. Commonly used in the Harry Potter fandom when someone over reacts about something small or mixes up what’s important.

“Now if you two don’t mind, I’m going to bed before either of you come up with another clever idea to get us killed- or worse, expelled!”

Space Gandalf (proper noun) – a title the Eleventh Doctor gives himself in a deleted scene of Doctor Who s5. Amy’s asking him what it is, after hearing he’s had a bunch of companions and being temporarily worried he’s some sort of space pedophile.

Spacey-Wacey (adj.) – See “Wibbly-Wobbly, Timey-Wimey.” Used by Eleven to explain something he can’t explain at the end of “The Doctor’s Wife.”

1) anything that gives away part of a television show, movie, or book, especially before it has been released. On text posts it is often hidden behind a “read more” or a “cut.”

2) a catchphrase of the character River Song from Doctor Who to describe how she knows stuff from the Doctor’s future that the Doctor doesn’t know, due to their travelling through time oppositely.

squee (noun, verb)- a noise emitted by a fangirl when put in a situation of extreme excitement.

squib (noun) – (see “muggle”) In the Harry Potter series, describes a non-magical person born in a magic family. In fadom, describes someone who is not a fan of the series.

StarKidPotter (proper noun) – SKP or TSK (Team StarKid) The theatre troupe that put on LWL, Starship, AVPM, AVPS, and MAMD. They are currently based in Chicago as of 2011 but were previously located at the University of Michigan. Members include Darren Criss and Joey Richter. Starship (proper noun) – Most recent of Starkid’s plays as of 2011. Stars Joey Richter as Bug. Music written by Darren Criss.

Strawberry Hill (noun) – type of cheap wine drunk by Pudge, Alaska, Takumi, and the Colonel in John Green’s book “Looking for Alaska.” Also actually a real beverage, which is apparently not as horrible IRL as it is in the book.

“When I see you, we’re going to drink Strawberry Hill and read Kurt Vonnegut novels by moonlight, just like in LfA.”

 

Steve (proper noun) – Doctor Who fanon as the name of the Silent who gave evidence against their entire race, leading to their destruction. Also used as blame, see “Barrowman” and “Lauren.” Similar to “Tyrone” in the rest of the internet.

Sucks Royal Hippogriff (phrase) – Not quite a Wizard Swear, but similar. Way to say that something sucks in a clean way. Originates from A Very Potter Musical.

supermegafoxyawesomehot (adj.) – positive description from A Very Potter Musical (Team Starkid) to describe someone more than beautiful. Currently used as a random positive phrase as opposed to necessarily just beauty.

SuperWho (proper noun) – name for the crossover between Doctor Who and Supernatural. Also used as something like a ship name for the main characters.

“I love SuperWho, don’t you? Sometimes I go on Omegle looking for Whovians and find some SPN fans and we still have something to talk about because of it.”

 

TARDIS (noun) – Time and Relative Dimension in Space. The ship, shaped like a blue police box, that the Doctor travels through time and space in on Doctor Who. As of “The Doctor’s Wife” is commonly referred to as “Sexy,” although the Doctor says, “only when we’re alone.” This episode also led to human!TARDIS, or Idris. Fans commonly use it as an excuse or as a desire. Most recognizable Doctor Who object and representation of the show.

“I’m sorry, the Doctor picked me up in the TARDIS so I left this morning and came back last week. Bit confusing really.”

Tennant Face (proper noun) – meme created around a spectacularly insane looking face made by David Tennant. It is then placed on all sorts of different bodies in a variety of GIFs and pictures.

Ten.5/TenTwo/10.5/Metacrisis!Ten (proper noun) – Doctor Who character created from the energy the Tenth Doctor channeled into his severed hand and Donna Noble. This half Time Lord/half human goes to live with Rose in her parallel universe, as the Doctor says he was ‘born in battle’ and therefore needs Rose to mellow him out or something.

“I really want my own Ten.5. I wouldn’t be as picky as Rose.”

 

Tennant Tuesdays (noun) – Tumblr phenomenon in which some David Tennant blogs or Whovian blogs post pictures of David Tennant even more incessantly on Tuesdays than on other days

“I love Tennant Tuesdays, especially when the pics are in hi-def. He’s just so supermegafoxyawesomehot!”

 

This Star Won’t Go Out (proper noun) – an organization founded by the parents of Esther Earl (see “Esther Earl”) after her death to help those suffering and the families of those suffering from cancer. Most Nerdfighters wear green rubber bracelets with this slogan on them to support the cause.

This Machine Pwns N00bs (phrase) – phrase quoted on Hank Green’s guitar and the title of one of his albums. Parody of Woody Guthrie’s guitar, which stated, “This Machine Kills Fascists” with internet slang. Woody Guthrie’s guitar is mentioned as a major clue in finding Margo in John Green’s book, “Paper Towns.”

Tuesday is alternately Topless Tuesday in which the females can post topless photos of themselves if they wish.

Trekie (noun) – fan of the TV programme Star Trek.

Trenchcoat (noun) – Article of clothing considered by non-fandom types to be worn by serial killers and pedophiles, but in fandom is considered heroic. Worn by Captain Jack Harkness of Torchwood, the Tenth Doctor of Doctor Who, BBC!Sherlock, and others in Supernatural.

“I really need a trenchcoat; it’s good for any costume.”

 


trock (noun)- Time Lord rock. The genre of music based around Doctor Who, as founded by Alex Day through the band Chameleon Circuit. 

“My favorite Trock song is Exterminate Regenerate, I feel it really covers the interaction between Davros and the Doctor.”

 

Try To Fix You/I Will Try To Fix You (phrase) – quote from David Tennant’s episode of Nevermind the Buzzcocks. In it he mentions that he really likes Coldplay and is instantly shot down. He then plays a snippet of the song “Fix You” and sings along.

“Coldplay is REALLY GOOD. Deal with it! ….And I willllll tryyyyyyy….. to FIXXX youuuu.”

 

TSK (proper noun) – see “StarKidPotter” or “Team StarKid”

 

Toast (noun) – Glee comic based fanon in which Kurt is entirely turned on by toast, as in, toasted bread. He makes Blaine make it for him all the time.

totally awesome (adj.) – a phrase commonly used by fans of Team Starkid as a positive description. Used in A Very Potter Musical.

“…my best friend Ron, cuz together we’re totally awesome!”

 

troll (noun) - someone who comments negative things just for fun and to spend time. See “giant squid of anger.” Minor ones post things like “u r a nurd” but there are some smarter ones who will spend hours setting up a good troll. The petty criminals of the internet community, some of whom are really geniuses. “Don’t feed the trolls” means that you shouldn’t say anything to them or egg them on. 

“Troll in the dungeon! Thought you ought to know” is a common response to them. 

“Can’t tell if trolling… or just very stupid.”

Tuesdays (noun) – In certain RP fanon, the day the Doctor and the Master get to see each other, particularly Tenth Doctor and Simm!Master. They are a generally fanon (and occasionally canon) accepted pairing. Generally the bondage chair seen in End of Time is associated in Tuesday fics. Non-RP fans might laugh at Master/Doctor ship RPs kindly and mention jokingly that it’s not Tuesday.

“Master… it’s not Tuesday yet, get out of my TARDIS.”

 

Tumbling/tumbl (verb) –using the website Tumblr, often for hours on end, and particularly on nights other people choose to socialize. See “Tumblr.”

Two (proper noun) – refers to the Second Doctor on Doctor Who as played by Patrick Troughton. Called Two or Second Doctor.

 


Tumblr (noun) – website where many fandom interactions take place. Everyone has one or several blogs with unique URLS, which can either have personal and random stuff on them or be dedicated to a particular fandom, ship, or purpose. “Tumblrites” are generally obsessive, slightly hipster, and dislike Facebook. If you’re reading this you’re probably on Tumblr right now because that’s what I’ve posted this dictionary to. 

“Do you have a life?”

“No, I have a Tumblr.”


Tumblr famous (adj.) - well-known and liked on Tumblr (see “Tumblr”) usually demonstrated by their large number of followers, or people who have their blog posts sent to their dash (see “dash”). The number of followers used to determine Tumblr famousness isn’t a set amount and varies based on who’s saying it, but it’s generally over 700. Others base Tumblr fame on how often people talk to the Tumblr user and how well liked they are. 

“I’m not Tumblr famous at all; no one ever talks to me, despite me having over 450 followers.” 


Tumblrites (noun) – see “Tumblr.” users of the website “Tumblr.”

“I spend so much time perusing my dash; I consider myself a proud Tumblrite.”

 

Twincest (noun) – Glee phenomenon and type of graphic and fic in which pictures are manipulated so as to include two of the same character and they are designated as twins and then shipped together. Doctor Who doesn’t need to manip pictures because the show so often gives them to us.

“Oh, what do you ship?”

“You know, 10/10.5, Amy/Amy, Master/Master…. Blaine and his twin, Everett…”

“Ew, you ship twincest? What a Gleek!”

 

Warner Chilcott (verb) – originates from the company that significantly raised Hank Green’s medication costs; screwed over

“I got Warner Chilcotted when the library decided my books were overdue.”

 

Watson loves jam (phrase) – originates from a comic and is not specific to any Holmes adaption, but Jam!Watson tends to be a bit thick. Often people make graphics in which Watson is obsessively looking for jam.

Watson: Holmes! A clue!

Sherlock: That’s not a clue, Watson, that’s a jar of jam.

What Is Air (phrase) - Tumblrspeak used to show that someone is so attractive, all the air has been sucked from their lungs. Or something like that. See “hnng,” “keyslam,” and “Can’t Even.”

Whovians (noun) – fans of the British sci-fi programme, Doctor Who. See “classic!Who” and “new!Who”

“I’ve watched every episode of Doctor Who ever; I think I can now go about calling myself a Whovian.”

 

Wibbly-Wobbly, Timey-Wimey (adj.) – term used by Ten in the Doctor Who s3 ep. “Blink” to describe stuff he can’t explain well.

“People assume that time is a strict progression from cause to effect, when, in actuality, from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint, it’s more a big ball of wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey… stuff.”

 

Wizard Swear (noun) – refers to any of a number of interjections used in the Harry Potter series or related to the Harry Potter series. Commonly used in place of real swears IRL. Some are from the book series, some are from A Very Potter Musical or Sequel, and some are merely fan created.

“There are some Wizard Swears scattered throughout this dictionary, and all of them are far more PG than real word swears.”

 

Woohoo/I’ve got cake (phrase) – the backstage moment on Doctor Who when John Barrowman walked up to David Tennant and patted him on the shoulder and told him he had brought him cake, and then Tennant’s response. Many Whovians believe all cake should be heralded in this way.

“David!”

“Ya?”

“I’ve got cake.”

“WOOHOOO!”

 

World awesome (noun) – The unquantifiable amount of awesome there is in the world; the amount of good stuff that needs to improve. Nerdfighter term. Not exactly the opposite of “world suck,” increasing world awesome is more like making people happy while decreasing world suck is more like cleaning up after natural disasters

“I spent the day handing out stickers to small children- a sure way to increase world awesome.”

 

World suck (noun) – The unquantifiable amount of suck there is in the world; the amount of bad stuff that needs to change. Nerdfighter term.

“Nerdfighters try to decrease world suck and increase world awesome.”

 

wrock (noun)- Wizard rock. The genre of music based around Harry Potter, founded by the band Harry and the Potters.

“My favorite Wrock band is Ministry of Magic; their songs are fantastic.”

 

vlog/vlogger (noun) – Video log or video blogger. A format for expression similar to journalling or blogging except in video form.

“I don’t really feel like writing today, so I think I’ll just talk to a friend or post a vlog on YouTube.”

 

Vlogbrothers (proper noun) – the username used by brothers Hank and John Green on YouTube (see “YouTuber”). They make videos three times a week and post them online, where they are viewed by thousands who call themselves Nerdfighters (see “nerdfighter”). The videos have prompted an online community devoted to making the world a better place and a fandom vocabulary that is unique to the organization. John is an author who loves pizza and Hank is a musician. Watch the Vlogbrothers FAQ for an explanation of a lot of the terms in this dictionary originating from the Vlogbrothers.


“The Vlogbrothers are my favorite YouTubers, and they have really inspired me to be a better person and a more active member of society.”

 

Vote/let’s go vote/voting (noun, phrase, verb) – Darren Criss failed analogy for sex. In a livestream, (see “Darren polka”) Darren called a fan who told him she was of age, meaning they could date. Darren instead replied that maybe they could vote together. Fans have explained the meaning to Chris Colfer and he has responded with amusement. It has become something of a meme.
“I’m of age, you know.”

“Oh cool maybe we could vote sometime.”

 

Vote Saxon (phrase) – new!Who phrase originating from the Master (known as simm!Master or saxon!Master) taking on the pseudonym of Harold Saxon and taking over the position of Prime Minister as such. He achieves this through Archangel Communications Network, which controls humans as a telepathic field. This is commonly seen on t-shirts.

“Vote Saxon? Oh, is he running in the next election? Haven’t heard of him.”

“Let’s HOPE he’s not running in the next election….”

 


Vworp Vworp (phrase) – The Doctor Who fanon way of pronouncing the TARDIS noise, as it isn’t strictly typable or sayable.

“I’m… I’m…. oh, what do you call me. I go VWORP VWORP.”

YouTuber (noun) – See “Vlogbrothers,” “vlog” and “Tumblrite.” User of the website YouTube. Often YouTubers make videos, but some just watch other popular YouTubers, such as charlieissocoollike, nerimon, vlogbrothers, and eddplant.

“I’m not much of a one for making videos, but I still consider myself a YouTuber because I spend so much time watching vlogs.”
