If you’re going to be making and posting lovely graphics or fanfiction or other type of art of some of the scenes from tonight’s Glee- the attempt, the crash, the memory- or any other picture or writing that discusses such deeply emotional issues as self-harm, suicide, etc., please make sure to tag them with ‘trigger,’ ‘trigger warning,’ ‘suicide,’ ‘self harm’ or ‘car crash’ as appropriate.
Even if these things don’t affect you, remember that there’s still a real chance that they might reach somebody else and might have a much more painful affect on them. The issues that Glee tackles are really personal to a lot of people and with that strength and emotional connection comes a responsibility in the fandom to take these things seriously and respectfully.
That includes limiting jokes regarding these topics to those that are strictly character based, if at all, and at least attempting to respect the needs of people who cannot or chose not to view content like that. It’s not your responsibility to keep everything you have to say to yourself or hide all of your beautiful art; it’s just a polite thing to do to give people some warning of the emotional content when it is such a personal and affecting set of issues.
What may be just a few seconds saved by not typing ‘trigger warning’ into your tags could lead somebody to relapse in negative or self-harming thoughts and actions or even go further than that as the situation dictates. It’s so much better to be safe than sorry, so if you don’t know if something could be triggering or not, tag it or mark it in some way anyways.
Thank you and have a fantastic evening.
